It’s that time of year again. You know the drill: we make resolutions and promises to ourselves, filled with optimism, ready to take on the world in the new year. ✨ “This is the year I’ll get in shape!” “I’ll finally write that book!” “I’ll build my dream business!”

But come February… life happens. The excitement fades, the gym membership goes unused, and the dream board starts gathering dust. Sound familiar?

I used to be that person, too. Every January, I’d declare, “This is MY year!” but by mid-month, I’d lost the spark and felt discouraged. Resolutions felt like empty promises I was doomed to break. But then, something shifted.

Let me take you back to the moment everything changed for me…

The Moment That Changed My Resolutions Forever

A few years ago, I decided to make a resolution that was different. Instead of vague, lofty goals like “I’ll be healthier,” I asked myself: What if I could make a resolution I could actually achieve? A resolution that wasn’t about forcing myself to change, but rather about becoming the person I wanted to be.

I didn’t just say “I want to lose weight” or “I want to start a business”—I got specific. I said, “I will walk 10,000 steps every day for 30 days” and “I will research my market for my business every week.” And guess what? I did it. ✅I realized that resolutions don’t have to be vague to be powerful. In fact, it’s the opposite—the more specific, the better.

The Secret to Making Resolutions That Stick

Here’s the thing: resolutions that work aren’t just about the what—they’re about the how. If your resolution is too big, too vague, or feels like a chore, it’s easy to give up. But if you break it down into smaller, actionable steps, you’ll start to see real progress, and that progress fuels motivation.

For example:

  • Instead of saying “I want to be healthier,” try “I will walk 10,000 steps per day for the next 30 days.”
  • Instead of saying “I’ll start a business,” try “I will dedicate one hour a week to researching my market and building my brand.”

The key is to create micro-resolutions that align with who you want to become.

How to Make Resolutions That Don’t Fizzle Out

  1. Be Specific: Forget “lose weight” or “get in shape.” Be clear. “Walk 10,000 steps” or “Do yoga every morning at 7 AM.”
  2. Make It Part of Your Identity: Resolutions aren’t just goals—they’re reflections of who you want to be. If you want to be someone who works out, start by saying, “I’m the kind of person who gets up early and works out.”
  3. Break It Down: A big goal can feel overwhelming. Break it down into smaller, bite-sized tasks so that it feels achievable. These “micro-resolutions” will help you build momentum throughout the year.
  4. Track Your Progress: A goal without tracking is like a road trip without a map. Keep track of your progress so you can celebrate the wins along the way.
  5. Use Your Vision Board: If you’ve ever heard me talk about vision boards, you know I swear by them. They’re a powerful tool to visualize your goals and stay focused.

What Do You Want to Achieve This Year?

As we step into 2025, think about the resolutions you’ve set in the past. What’s worked? What hasn’t? This year, let’s make it different. Let’s stop making vague promises and start setting resolutions that truly reflect the life we want to live.
